The ENT physician: specialist for the head and neck region
At first glance, the term "ear, nose and throat physician" (ENT physician) may seem a little unwieldy. The labels "mouth-nose-ear physician" or "pharynx-nose-ear physician" would seem just as apt. The umbrella term "throat", however, makes clear that the ENT physician’s field extends far beyond the mouth and pharynx.
ENT physicians: specialists for the head region
ENT physicians are specialists for the entire head region and the neck area. Besides the nose and ears, this also includes:
- Oral cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea (windpipe)
- Oesophagus (gullet)
- Thyroid gland (in the surgical field)
Conditions of the head and neck region
ENT physicians accordingly treat a broad spectrum of conditions, including:
- Colds
- Sudden hearing loss
- Tinnitus
- Snoring
- Laryngeal cancer
The oral cavity and the throat
The oral cavity and the throat (pharynx) mark the beginning of the upper airway and the upper digestive tract. In the mouth, food is broken down, mixed with saliva and prepared for swallowing; at the same time this area takes part in forming the sounds of speech. The pharynx is a muscular tube that connects the mouth and nasal cavity with the larynx and the oesophagus. Here the airway and the food passage cross, and a finely coordinated swallowing process ensures that food travels into the oesophagus and not into the windpipe.
The oral cavity and throat are also home to the tonsils. They belong to the lymphatic defence system and play a part above all in childhood, as the immune system comes to terms with pathogens. Mucous membranes, salivary glands and a dense network of nerves and blood vessels make this a sensitive yet highly versatile part of the body.
Common complaints – explained in general terms
Complaints in this region often present as a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or the feeling of a foreign body in the throat. Many of them arise in the course of a cold and subside on their own after a few days. Possible causes include inflammation of the mucous membrane, the tonsils or the larynx. Determining the precise cause of such complaints belongs in specialist hands.
As a general orientation: if complaints in the mouth, throat or neck persist, recur repeatedly, or are accompanied by symptoms such as lasting hoarseness, unexplained swelling or marked swallowing difficulties, a medical assessment is advisable. This helps distinguish harmless causes from those that require treatment. The information resources from independent bodies listed below offer an easy-to-understand overview.
Because the mouth, nose, throat, larynx and ears are closely connected anatomically and functionally, ENT medicine treats this region as a whole. Obstructed nasal breathing, for instance, can affect the throat and the voice, and swallowing complaints can often only be understood correctly when the structures involved are considered together. Simple habits generally help keep this region healthy: drinking enough fluids, avoiding tobacco smoke, good oral and dental care, as well as sufficient sleep and fresh air.
